Thank you, Anatoliy. Your suggestion makes sense. And most likely I will end up working with the signature file anyway because most of my customers are fairly low-tech and would rather pay me than do it themselves. And it is helpful for me to understand the pros and cons of different graphical file formats mainly to make the printing more stable. My biggest concern is not really the size of the file (BMP vs JPG vs PNG) but rather to minimize a possible VFP error on working with this or that format. I would rather lose on speed and gain on stability than the other way around.
