How would I call an executable named prog1.exe from a vfp form?

Try RUN /N

Note that RUN is said to violate certain windows rules so you might be better to use the Windows Scripting Host:
#define SW_SHOW_NORMAL 1
#define SW_SHOW_MINIMIZED 2
#define SW_SHOW_MAXIMIZED 3
oShell = createobject("WScript.Shell")
oShell.Run("notepad.exe",SW_SHOW_NORMAL,.T.)
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
