Just one layer less to worry about, and yes, fewer files. But that's about it - there aren't too many other differences. I think this thread covers them all. So the deficiencies of one or the other approach can be worked around in a couple of hours (and actually were, in pretty much any framework out there) - nowadays it's become a matter of taste, existing code etc.
