>Funny, though, that whenever there are chances that a next dictator, or just plain right-winger who will rent the country cheap to foreign companies, taking mere 2-3%, which will be a disaster for the local economy (as it usually turns out to be), there's nary a whisper about any "crisis of confidence". Every time a leftist has a chance at the elections, there's this implicit (or explicit) blackmail that the contracts will go away, the economy will collapse (because the capital will flee a government it doesn't like?). I've heard this so many times, first in Italian and German elections in the seventies - probably happened dozens of times before but I didn't read about it - and goes on and on.

Why don't they just prop up an honest dictator, rent the country to the lowest bidder and be done with the charade?

The link above dates to 2002, apparently Brazil has paid off all its IMF loans since:

My point was, if white, blue-eyed bankers at the IMF know nothing now, they knew less than nothing back then, so what were they doing bailing out Brazil?
