From friends on my diaspora mailing list, who have all regularly downloaded the most recent AV software for the last 18 years... IOW, pack of old wolves, no worries.

It may be unsafe if your optical cable gets caught by too strong a stream - say, if you're living downstream of a zoo, and they just flushed after elephants got alleviated. From how I understood the instructions, if that happens, just let go of the cable and get another kit.
