I actually am setting them in advance, but based on which edge (or corner) of the screen the user starts dragging/sizing I want to make the max (or min) width and height different. The reason is that I have several graphic controls that scale fine, but only to a point. They look fine at a height-to-width ratio of as small as 1:1.2 and as wide as 1:3, but if I allow less or more than that, the interface starts looking too skewed. So if the user is sizing only on the X axis and the inner controls are already at a 1:2.5 ratio, the screen shouldn't be allowed to stretch much wider. However, if the user sizes from the corner of the screen, sizing both height _and_ width, the screen could be allowed to be sized much wider so long as it was also sized much taller.
Interface stuff like this can lead a man to drink <g>.
