With laptops, you generally get one of two different types of "original CD-ROMs":

- a "disaster recovery" CD (effectively, an image-restore CD). If you run this, it will destroy any existing data on your hard drive, and reinstall Windows and all applications to the factory-installed condition. This CD should include all drivers, properly configured.

If you believe this is the type of CD you have, there are a few things that may have happened:

- have you upgraded it with add-on video or LAN card?
- was the laptop's BIOS upgraded after you purchased it?
- if the new hard drive you're putting in is larger than the old one there are some possible issues here. Some of the image reinstallers don't work properly if the new drive isn't the same size as the old one. Another (unlikely) possibility is that the laptop may not properly recognize or be able to fully use a large hard drive. For example, when replacing a drive on an older Dell 300 server the other day, I discovered it can only handle hard drives up to 128GB, even with the most recent BIOS update. You can install a larger drive, but it can only see the first 128GB of it, and if you use another machine to create a partition that goes beyond 128GB then it hangs on boot.

OR

- a relabeled Windows XP Setup CD. With this, you're basically installing Windows XP. You then have to reinstall any other programs that may have come with the computer on separate CDs. In this case, often there are laptop-specific drivers that are not on the OEM XP Setup CD, which you have to download and install yourself. Of course, if the LAN driver isn't installed you can't get on the Internet. In that case, you have to download it using another computer, and transfer the driver files or setup to your laptop via USB stick etc. Once you've got an Internet connection you can go to the Toshiba site and download any other required drivers.

With my limited exposure to Toshiba laptops, they usually seem to give you image reinstallers (the first type, above), so your reinstallation process should "just work", and get you back to where you were when you first received the machine.
