Based on what happened here in the U.S. after the news stories about parents being deported back to Mexico when they have child(ren) born here and the negative press it created, I'm guessing that the media will stay on this until Japan quietly changes their behavior, if not their policy as the U.S. has done.

Not necessarily the case. What is happening is due to the negative image portrayed, they are not deported but rather allowed to remain here but in limbo:
