They should have known. They never gave anything for free, either.

The paradox is that the staunchest capitalists who insist on their own right to charge as much as or more than society can afford, also seem to think that government involvement to rescue them should have been free. It's all about entitlement for themselves: entitlement to massive bonuses despite the screwup. Entitlement to taxpayer bailouts that exceed those available to the undeserving by orders of magnitude. Entitlement to be rescued by massive $$$ injection from the lender of last resort who can then be dismissed after their intervention succeeds. Seems clear to me that "same old same old" is not an option in the banking industry and if reducing incomes to only a mill or two drives some of the geniuses out, then what a shame- and government would be well advised to prepare to intervene in whatever sector they bless with their presence next.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
