Depend what you like to do.
If you like to read data from a barcodereader connected to the comp with VFP runnung, see Sergeys advice.

Reader transmits data via radio (whatever). Then there will be some program driver etc that will recieve the data. I have never done this.

Offline reader. The reader runs some programm on it that collects the data. At some time the reader will tranfer a file. You need to figure out when the file is recieved. The format of the file is free of choice. The interface must be defined with the programmer of the reader.

No hardware reader. Scan via office scanner, use of some OCR, for example http://www.qualitysoft.de/index_en.html , search sidebar for products / barcode sdk. This will enable you to control the scan process.
