It sounded like your Repair_checklist table had 6 logical fields lRepairType1, lRepairType2,.. lRepairType6. That's what a repeating column would be and data normalization says those columns should be rows of another table.
It's not as hard to build the grid as it might sound, but it may not be worth the effort of redesign at this point.
