The sign me in automatically is what Facebook is using. The Remember me is what we are using on this site, which preserves the data but requires a confirmation from the user. This has been changed like that because of too many security in place now with several products which were interferring with the other approach.
The point here is that if I'm in the messages area (therefore already logged in), and then click the homepage, or just navigate to UT from a new tab/window, there's still the login dialog, although I'm already logged in. If I forget that I am, and log in again, I get a new messages window which contains only new messages since the last refresh in the first window.
The solution would be simple - don't offer a login if I'm already logged in.
