>Wrong. He was part of a wing of the Republican party that has been essentially forced out of existence. Lowell Weicker was a Republican, Lincoln Chafee was a Republican, etc., etc. There used to be moderate Republicans who were fiscally more conservative and socially more liberal. The right wing of the Republican party has decided that if you're not socially conservative, they don't want you.

It is amusing when people with leftist views start telling what Lincoln or Roosevelt would recognize in today's political environment and/or what Republican party should do to gain something in this environment. In my opinion it comes from wrong self-estimate, i.e. as long as you do not belong to particular political movement making advices and recommendations how this movement should or even must behave is just not humble. It would be quite reasonable to reduce own ego to advices and recommendations how your own movement should behave.
