Just an update on what I ended up doing. Since I have 2005 databases and one 2008 database, I figured it would always be easier to upgrade older ones to newer than to access newer databases with the older version of SQL, I ended up just upgrading my SQL install to 2008 and have just the single install.
Thanks for all the help Sergey and Tracey. So far no problems.
Now I think I just long for a new Server box here so I can install SBS Premium and have my SQL and other tools off my dev machine.

I only want the workstation components without inadvertently installing SQL 2008. They don't make it real clear when you have reached the last click where you get what you don't want.
