My ex's birthday is easy to remember because it's the same as our first daughter's. It was not an easy delivery (which one is?) and when the hard part was over I said, among many other things and hugs, hell of a way to spend your birthday. She gave me a battle scarred smile worthy of the madonna herself and said it's the best birthday I ever had.

Fortunately we are amiable exes. (Up to a point, and no, don't ask). The first two or three years after I left were horrible. Hell hath no fury and all that. These days we are out of the emotional hotbed and focus on our mutual interests, which is to say our daughters. Amiable really is the word that comes to mind. Human emotions must have a built-in shutoff valve.
