thanks agnes - that explains alot.

it seems there should be a way 'before' the clos alte that the symbol can be erased, but if it signals the EOF, if it were erased, it would reappear again as the clos alte was applied.

no worry, i have a useful collection of ways to get rid of it now. thanks for the info
