Still doesn't work if I try it to instantiate a version older than the last one installed. I.e. when I tried the SUID for Word 11, it either didn't work or it still launched 12. Among other tricks I tried, in my attempts to instantiate 11 over 12, I tried a dirty one - placed a copy of the olb in the app's directory. While it still instantiated 12 (last I remember - and my memory is particularly thin on "which one of the dozen tricks did what exactly"), it relieved me of hardcoding the path. And I guess it simplifies the maintenance - if the user installs a newer version, I only need to copy the latest olb there (or maybe the old one would still work?), no recompile.
