I did try your method and get the weight info returned to the terminal. This is a very good way to make sure my port and connection set up correctly. Now, it seems to me I still have problem hooking it up with VFP5.0a. Once in a while, it works for me but there must be something wrong. Do you have or happen to know any code example around?
