I don't know if you can legally refuse service to someone on the basis of their not providing their SIN. Now, you are in the USA, they are in Canada, so I am really less sure about that. I am not a lawyer, but this is something to consider. You wouldn't want a lawsuit on your hands...

Any are you inferring that I'm a deadbeat?

Just kidding.

Take care.

>right. we'd only use it to track deadbeats who don't want to pay their bills. if they don't want to give the info, we can ask for some other identifier or refuse service.

>>Good advice. There are a lot of people (including myself) who do not like to give out their SIN. If you don't need it for Revenue Canada reporting, it is none of your business.

>>>And be aware that there are only a few places where a Canadian has to give his/her SIN (his/her employer, welfare application). Nobody can force you to provide this number.

>>>It is also forbiden to be used in any other purpose than the one for which it was requested. Most of the companies keep this number encrypted in their tables (or upgrade their systems to encrypt it).
>>>
>>>So, you cannot use it as a unique key.
