I believe it's non-recursive solution of a recursive problem thus very hard to understand. Also the naming convention makes it harder, IMHO.

It's a framework class code, BTW, but I ran into the problem when user stored images under the application folder in hundreds of subfolders and the SET PATH command was breaking.
