I'd say they are saving those companies in the short term so they can be kept going .

Yeah, yeah - that's why billions of taxpayer dollars were poured into GM and Chrysler - because bankruptsy was not an option. Well, guess what? Apparently bankrupty is an option. What is so great about keeping an unprofitable company afloat? I fail to see your logic here. Are you saying that when horse and buggy comanies were going out of business due to the increased availability of automobiles that the government should have bailed them out? Absurd!

The alternative would be enormous unemployment.
