I use the "DefName" value of the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MS Setup (ACME)\User Info" key from the registry. There is also a "DefCompany" name there too.

You can also find at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services", with alot more machine information.

I am not sure which application maintains these setting for user name, but I find them useful at times.
