Actually I found that the performace will break down when user selects the >> (Last Page) of the pager. I guess this is due to the records reside at the most bottom part of the selected query and thus affect the performance, and I need to use UNION to avoid duplicate records.

Is there a better approach? As some of my screens may retrieve 100k records, kindly advise.
