Yes, it was pleasant to have compatibility between several consecutive versions.
However, to be fair, it can't be read by those that didn't install a certain upgrade. There is an upgrade available that allows Office 2003 to read both Word and Excel, version 2007, files. It works fine on my computer. I didn't specifically try it with PowerPoint documents.
