Using lat and long for getting distance works, and there is a site (can not remember where i found it) where you can get all lat and long coordinates for zipcodes. I just googled and found it.

Works great in our situation, we have certain addresses that we are unable to determine the lat and long coordinates so when that happens, we just use the coordinates for the zip code to determine distance.

I assume(?) there is a logical layout to zip codes to make this possible as I see it on websites all the time. Has anyone worked out a procedure or resources to accomplish this?
