Doesn't make any sense. Are you using a framework of sorts or just plain VFP?
Either way, try setting a breakpoint at the point where this call happens, then look at the oApp -object in the debugger -- specifically look at the cDefDocLocNoSlash -property and make sure that there are no spaces or other strange characters in there. You could copy the value for cDefDocLocNoSlash from the debugger and paste it to your SET DEFAULT TO (...paste it here...) -statement as is and see if that works.
If that does work, then I would try rebooting the computer and trying again. If that doesn't work, I would pack the project and rebuild the app with the rebuild all -option. If that still doesn't work, I would personally probably start drinking Grey Goose (product placement!) at that point (although I know this wouldn't be your choice...)
>No, it bombed on that, that is, adding the _SCREEN. This is so bewildering.

>>DId you forget "_SCREEN"? What does SET DEFAULT TO (_SCREEN.oApp.cDefDocLocNoSlash) return? Should work fine.
