I had a similar experience with DBase. I wrote and installed a working payroll program that ran for several years a few days after getting DBase II.
I've been learning C#. C# does a lot more than DBase II did, so there's a lot more to learn and therefore it will take a lot longer.
Because of its broad scope, authors have had a difficult time producing a good book to use for learning .NET.
After trying several with checkered results, I finally setttled on Deitel's C# 2008 for Programmers.
It's a good book, but it will be a long while before I'm as comfortable with C# as I am with VFP.
