>I have a MS-SQL Server 2005 database running on a production server (Windows Server 2003 x64 edition) and I have created a backup of the database into a .bak file. I can successfully restore this database backup file on my Windows XP workstation using the Overwrite existing database option. The version of SQL Server on my workstation is the developer version.

When attempting to restore this backup file using the overwrite database option, it immediately stops and freezes the server entirely to where I have to re-boot. I have checked the event log but it shows no errors just information items.

I don't know if this would help, but have you tried creating multiple backup files?
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
