I can't say that I understand these linguistics either, by similarly obvious reason. At the same time, I see some other difference: Marcia emotional reactions are based on real facts from Mike's life, while Mike emotional reactions are based on simple inference about Marcia, i.e. they are essentially imaginary. Generally speaking, insults tend to contain imaginary part.
