While I have been working on that I am hitting another problem.
I have an xml file. The following code will prodice an error:
o = createaboject('msxml2.freethreaddomdocument')
o.loadxml(myfile)
?o.getelementbytagname(elementname).item(0).nodetypevalue - error Member ITEM does not evaluate to an object

but this will work:
o.loadxml(filetostr(myfile))

So, what does filetostr do?
