You might not have write permissions on this drive. When you actually move files from one NTFS drive to another, Windows moves all file permissions along. This would be the user information on your XP machine. If you aren't using the same account on the Vista machine, you wouldn't have write access to the file. To avoid this, either reset the security information, or copy the files to the external drive instead of moving them.
