On others, the file pointer in the grid points to the first child record but shows records belonging to other parents as well (all tables opened in data environment and relations established there) What determines the behavior?

Are you using a SET RELATION TO construction? If so, then the child will show all records until a record is selected in the parent. So at first start if you do not select a parent record then all the child records will show. Once a parent record is selected then only those children will display.
