We can't use 8.3 filenames in this case. I found a tip on creating UDLs on the 4GuysFromRolla (my alma mater) site and what it created had spaces ok and it worked I thought because specifying the DefaultDir= fixed it, but it may have been a dangling connection to the spreadsheet from earlier testing because now the original code is working too...
