IMHO for free tables you're not missing anything. In VFP9 you can have AutoInc field in free table, but if this feature is not used in your tables, you don't lose anything.

The DBF header is documented in Help, I just don't recall exactly where and don't have VFP here to check - I may google on this if you want. It should be also documented in Fox.Wikis
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
