Are you saying now that US taxes aren't too high after all, or are you avoiding the point that if you want the best, why wouldn't you expect to pay extra for it? ;-)
If you're worried about distortions, tax isn't the worst IMHO. The modern market allocates more $ to bankers than scientists and more creativity to marketing than to product. Apart from creating horrid nouveau riche, these behaviors stifle the sorts of innovation that until recently delivered most of the improved QOL at little extra cost. More and more $ is flowing to people who don't actually improve things for anybody except themselves. Why is that a good idea?
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
