The same happened to us, and we did two things that speeded everything up:

1. Open VSS directly, rightclick your project, select the DELETED FILES tab, and PURGE everything.

2. Go to TOOLS, OPTIONS, LOCAL FILES, and uncheck the "COPY KEYWORD EXPANDED ..." checkbox.
