The U.S. has 50 states and 50 stars on its flag. However, we also have the District of Columbia (Wash D.C.) and some terroritories and commonwealths (I'm not talking about the states that are commonwealths, I'm talking about separate identities like the Somoan Islands, Puerto Rico, Marisian, Guam, etc).

We never say we have 52 states. However, for your repartition, it is perfectly fine to put Wash D.C. and all of the U.S. terroritories and commonwealths as a part of the U.S. although we consider all of those (EXCEPT D.C.) separate countries.
