As long as you are targeting TWAIN-compliant scanners (which is the majority these days), you could use an ActiveX like Viscom's scanner control (www.viscomsoft.com.) It comes with pretty comprehensive samples for VFP, and has worked quite well for me. It has a few quirks here and there, but overall it is a capable, multi-talented and reasonable priced (US $75 for single developer unlimited distribution license) control that can have OCR capabilities as well (for additional price.)
