Check the ONCOMM event to find out what is returned from the port. You can set your rthreshold property to the number of characters you expect so the ONCOMM event only fires when enough characters are returned.
There is a nifty form available that shows all the settings and is an excellent learning tool. I think it came from Ken Blume who is a member here.
