I'm actually heartened that there are standards in place for the US government, and that various watchdog groups are holding their feet to the fire. Private sites are the Wild West in comparison.

Not that cookies really mean all that much anyways - if you're on broadband and your IP address doesn't change often, any site you visit can figure out who you are.

It looks to me like Obama & Co. are investigating enhancing/personalizing services delivered via the Web. This may require cookies, but that doesn't make it automatically all bad.
