It is indeed a great opportunity for the US. I can imagine that the population wants this chance to become a real success story. Strong debates are a logical consequence, but it should be debates between groups that ALL want the system to change. If it's between those who want it to change and others who are quite satisfied with how it already is (the status quo) then the debate is a pityful thing.
