For the audit trail in Bata/Bolivia, we had code similar to the one in the article, called from a table trigger function like _audit("D"), _audit("I") or _audit("U") (for the three cases, "delete", "insert", "update"), attached to each table in the database.

Eventually we saw the need to omit recording audit information under certain circumstances; we did this through some variable, which was checked in the audit trail functions.
