You certainly could have volunteered. Even though the draft had ended, many did. Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird announced the draft was ended in favor of voluntary enlistment on January 27, 1973. Most draft protests were due to the view that the draft was unfair because it appeared to target poorer members of society because they couldn't get college deferments.
