C# is an ECMA standard, not a Microsoft standard. There are non-MS implementations of the compiler, the framework, the IDE. If you buy into the latest and greatest Microsoft technologies, you might be locked in. But the .NET platform by itself is a very open one. Applications that rely on more mature components such as ASP.NET and WinForms can run on a variety on platforms. Those are provided by Novell which isn't exactly a small and unknown player in our industry.
