Even just 10 years ago, the company I used to work for would have christmas parties where bonuses would be paid out. The men, whether single or married, received bonuses double or triple the amount of women. It didn't matter what their responsibilities were at work. Some of the women held higher positions at lower wages than men in jobs with less responsibilities. Quite a few of the men were uncomfortable about it all, but none were uncomfortable enough to complain, refuse the bonus, or share it. The company was later sold to a huge financial firm who stopped that practice immediately and they even reviewed the salaries and made some adjustments. The adjustments were not competitive though and many of the better folks chose to leave. Of course, when the positions were filled again, the salaries were much more competitive. After that happened a few times, the salaries were again adjusted to be more competitive for those who chose to stay. It was in a metro area but not a large one and many of the women stayed only long enough to get the experience on their resume so they could move on to a better paying job in the same field.
