This can be caused by a number of settings. For instance, the COLLATE sequence in the EXE and the OLE DB provider, or the setting for SET DELETED. If you use ProcessMonitor from Sysinternals, you can see what file operations occur. Then it will become obvious that the OLE DB provider, too, accesses the files directly just like the EXE.
