I found the only reliable way to create an animation is by using a COM EXE that displays a form with the animation. The EXE runs in its own thread and is therefore free to display the animation while the main application keeps running.

This is exactly the behavior that I got.. I can see the form's content and a freeze animated gif..

Compiling on dif EXE and using it as COM EXE works fine.. And seems to be the solution..
