In cases where I use memo fields, they are difficult to replace with something else, so I don't think it is a good idea to abstain from using them. Also, consider that regular DBF files can also get corrupted - as well as indices. (With indices you don't lose table data, but you can lose time detecting and correcting the problem.) So, I would suggest:
1. That you do use memo files.
2. That you have a regular backup procedure, to cope with corruption in memo files and regular DBF files, as well as accidental changes by users.
