Kevin - Thank you very much. Tip 5 in your 3rd article here is exactly what I had in mind and vaguely remembered seeing at a time when I wasn't yet ready to absorb it.

BTW, as I told you once long ago in a fan email I have always been an admirer of your technical writing and your ability to explain some pretty arcane concepts in an approachable way. Having done a lot of teaching I know that takes a lot of thought and empathy and I really appreciate being on the receiving side of training of this quality.

I'll go over all this material, especially the Bakers Dozen Tip 5: The New Table Data Type from the july/aug 2008 Code Magazine. Very useful stuff and I am sure this is the approach I am going to adopt. I'll report back here with the results.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
