Legal note : The exit bag checks are legal as long as they are voluntary. Unless the store has reasonable suspicion of theft, you are in no way legally required to submit your bag nor receipt for an exit check if you choose not to. A fine legal line but most exit checkers have been trained properly and will avoid confrontation without cause.

Legal note 2 : Club stores may have a clause in the membership contract requiring exit check. While they legally cannot force you to submit to a check, they can discontinue your membership for violation of the contractual terms. Costco is one such outfit that includes the clause.
